Block Grant Program

Program Overview

Lexington County receives approximately $1.8 million dollars annually from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. This money is used to implement the Community CDBGDevelopment Block Grant (CDBG) Program. The CDBG Program provides funds for projects that primarily assist low and moderate-income persons in securing:

Decent housing; Suitable living environments; and Expanded economic opportunities.

CDBG funds can be used to build community facilities, roads, parks; to repair or rehabilitate housing; to provide new or increased public services to County residents; or to fund initiatives that generate new jobs.

 Lexington County’s CDBG allocation funds projects in all incorporated and unincorporated areas of the County.

To receive assistance from CDBG, every project must meet one of three National Objectives:

  • Benefits low and moderate income persons;
  • Aid in the prevention or elimination of slums or blight;
  • Meet a need having a particular urgency (urgent need)

Eligible activities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Public Facilities and Infrastructure
  • Slum and Blight
  • Public Services
  • Affordable Housing and Neighborhood Revitalization
  • Minor Housing Rehabilitation
